In field it is a common experience that mostly the inner ERC's get seized. IRPWM provides for keymen the work of greasing of ERC's of 20 sleepers /day. Is it necessary to grease the outer ERC's also evev if they are not jamming/seizing ? Any guidelines in this regard ?

Para No1411(5)provides the frequency of greasing of ERC i.e. in corrosion prone area twice in year and in non corrosion prone area once in area and it is mandatory.

can greasing of ERC be done in monsoon period...!!
One of the very high officer of NER says that this is an activity that should be done round the year even in monsoons..!!
He even made the following chages with immediate effect..( I can make available the letter if so desired)
ERC Greasing frequency got doubled.
Frequency of Painting of gauge face side rail got doubled in corrosion pone area
Greasing toungue rail every 3 weeks.
Opening SEJ for complete visual inspection every 3 months.
There was an order given to one of the aen of LKJ division to remove each ERC and visually inspect each contact location personally in his entire jurisdiction.
IS THIS PRACTICALLY POSSIBLE ??
No thought was given to workforce.. or respect to laid down inspection schedules..!!

Rail foot corrosion is a war and will have to be dealt like war. Doubling the frequency of greasing and painting is only just appropriate. Monsoon is the time when there is no jammed ERC and ideally the best time to handle a section with backlog of greasing.

We need to make a few systemic changes like providing an additional man with the keyman, ensuring regular supply of paint and grease and contracts for the same, greasing the innner ERCs more frequently and so on....

Sir in south central railway particularly in vijayawada division which is completely under coastal belt causing more corrosion. Hence we are lubricating ERC's once in a year as per standing order.
In practical it is essential for inside ERC's to lubricate as per schedule to reduce seizing of ERC's and also to reduce loss of toe load due to corrosion.
In my openion it is better to lubricate out side ERC once in 3 years to have effective toe load and it is better to inter change the ERC's out side to inside and vice versa to have uniform life.

I was discussing this with one of my mentors today. We must not lose focus toward changing the design of coach toilets . That is the only and effective solution. All other methods discussed above are energy and money wasters

sir, there is some practical problem for greasing erc in monsoon that is sticking of grease on the wet surfacesof erc leg and insert is very difficult and non uniform also and ingrese of rain water will also create problem of further rusting,

Sirs,
Please try the sealing of the gap between rail foot and the liner such that the moist ingress is restricted or prevented.
One of such material is released GRPs cut to the convenient size coated with grease.
1. This will make the ERC with MCI eyes rotational during Traffic and seizure of ERCs can be minimised
2.The moist ingress is restricted at the liner seat .
The above is being on trial in TUP section

Can any one help me to solve this question based on there Filed experience

1. How much time is required for greasing of One ERC and sealing linear area
2. Grease Qty required for greasing ERC One PSC sleeper
3. Total Grease required for one KM of PSC track
4. In your Division what is total length of PSC track and what is Greasing frequency.
5. Total qty of grease required
6. (i) Grease required/KM =Frequency once a year
7. (ii) Grease required/KM =Frequency twice a year

Dear GRD,

Your observation will be agreed by most of P Way enineers that inner ERC's get jammed more than outer. That is why we are supposed to interchange the inner and outer ERC's while greasing. This is to make the average life of inner and outer ERC's same so that they can be changed simultaneously at the end of their life.

Since corrosion is a slow phenomenon hence the exchange effect will not be instantly visible, but if you keep on doing it year on year the effect of corrosion will average out on inner and outer clips.

Some wise guy has calculated the consumption of grease per ERC which we are using for calculating qty to indent. They have also specified qty of grease required for curves, Pnc's, SEJs etc. I'll search in my note and give the figure. Regarding time required it is generally about 2 min per ERC.

There is a CE Circular in Southern Railway No1/2011 which specifies the Greasing requirements based on the corrosion proneness of the locality and it is not mandatory to grease outside ERC also.It had tried even two years back by greasing the inside ERC alone and increasing the no of sleepers per key man to 30 and achieved good results
